Practice, practice, practice

Gareth Southgate has worked hard to dispel the myth that a penalty shoot-out is as random as a flip of a coin, an unpredictable lottery, almost impossible to prepare for.

Through meticulous planning, repetition and psychology he has helped England exorcise their innate fear of spot-kicks.

Southgate had his players practice penalties at the end of training sessions in a bid to simulate the intense pressure-cooker of a World Cup shoot-out.

England full-back Kieran Trippier, who was one of the England players to score his spot-kick, explained how the squad have been forced to practice shoot-outs when they are physically and mentally exhausted.

“Every session of training, when we are fatigued at the end, we practice," said Trippier.

"And we have scored some great ones in training. We practised and practised and it paid off.
“I had a plan.

I knew the spot I was going to put it in. I had practiced putting it there. There's no sense in trying to change it, confusing yourself.”

"We've worked tirelessly on them (penalties). The gaffer has been reiterating it's not all about luck; it's a skill under pressure and the boys did it well. The staff have studied penalties for weeks and it's paid off tonight," added Harry Maguire.

"We have practised enough, we have been through a process and we were in control of that," said Southgate.

"I felt so confident in the players, even after the first one was saved, because we knew we would save one of theirs."

Gareth Southgate has emphasised the need for England to 'own' the moment in penalty shoot-outs

"We looked at technique, how we needed to be as a team, the goalkeeper's role.
"Shootouts are tough.

We had talked long and hard about owning the process of a shootout. They kept calm. The players have taken it all on board, it's a special moment for us.
