Paul Pogba’s performances for Manchester United may not have been mixed but that does not alter the fact that he is one of the biggest football brands out there.

It’s very difficult to put a value on players but there is no doubt Pogba is a huge brand in his own right - a recent study by the firm SportPro ranked him the most marketable sportsman on the planet - and clubs will benefit from that if he plays for them. He will raise the social media profile of a club just by wearing their shirt.

Increasingly, clubs don’t just buy players based solely on their performances on the pitch. The best recent example was David Beckham when he signed for Paris Saint Germain.

He hardly played but the club benefited because he raised their profile and there was also income generated through shirt sales and so on.

It has become even bigger now because of social media. Players have become brands in their own right and Pogba is one of the biggest around at the moment.

It is difficult to put your finger on exactly why that it is, but some players just have the sort of personality that attracts interest and he has tapped into that with use of social media.

Manchester United will have been well aware of his profile when they signed him from Juventus, bringing him back for a lot more money than they received when he left for Italy.

Pogba is one of those players who has something special in terms of marketing. He is a great player who did extremely well at the World Cup, but it is more than that.  He he is also a personality who attracts attention and courts it.

Certain players come along and they capture the imagination of the wider public, as much for who they are as what they do as a player.

Wayne Rooney was another former Manchester United player who was like that and Beckham before him, of course.

They have a story that appeals to people and they attract a lot of media coverage because of it.

With Pogba, it isn’t just the mainstream media, it is his use of social media and the number of people who want to follow him to see what he does away from the game.

It is something that has been happening in American sports for some time and we are seeing it in football now as well.
